Hiding Among the Baggage

Hi Friends,

I was reading in the book of Samuel the other morning, specifically in Chapter 10, and was struck by the fact that my fears may not be so different then Saul’s. Saul was the first person to be appointed by God to be King over the nation of Israel. Saul had been anointed by the Prophet Samuel and that information was just about to be made known to the rest of the tribes. In verse 6 of this chapter we are told “The Spirit of the Lord will come upon you (Saul) in power, you (Saul) will prophesy with them (other prophets) and you will be changed into a different person. Once these signs are fulfilled do whatever your hand finds to do, for God is with you.” —

Once these signs are fulfilled… hmm – I thought about these verses for awhile. Yes, these were written to Saul, for Saul and during Saul’s time. But do they have meaning for us today? I think so. When we accept the Lord‘s invitations to become a child of His, as is signified by our confession of belief followed up with baptism, we too are changed into a new person (2 Corinthians 5:17), I suspect much the same way as Saul. And, like Saul, we too should be able to “do whatever our hands find to do; as God is with us”. At our baptism we are given the promised Holy Spirit to dwell within, aka meaning God is with us!!! None of this means we can run amuck as sin is still sin and God will not honor nor bless that, as we see later in Saul’s life. But, if we have accepted the call of God on our life, just as Saul was annointed to be king, and if we are changed as the Scripture says, and God is truly with us, just as Scripture says, then here is my question for me, for the day; “Why do I not live my life as if God is with me, and with the confidence that what I put my hand to, God is in the mix and I need not fear the outcome?”

The interesting thing about this question is the answer may lay in verse 22… they are looking for Saul the recently chosen king, and cannot find him… why not? -“Because Saul has hidden himself among the baggage.” Interesting place to be don’t you think, for one who has just been anointed king? Why on earth is Saul hiding among the baggage? Scripture never reveals the answer to that question for Saul, but I might have an answer for me and my life as I hide among the baggage.

I think I might not be so very much different than Saul, I have God with me in all ways and yet I am hiding among the baggage of my past. Those things that say Sandra you are not good enough to succeed at this; or Sandra you are getting too old to even begin to dream about such things; or Sandra that should have been done when you were younger. Sandra you don’t have the skill or the knowledge to accomplish this – now it is too late; Sandra if only you had done this or that, if only you hadn’t wasted your time on, or you are too fat, too old, too out of shape, … or…. well the list could simply go on-and-on. All the shoulda, woulda, coulda and cannots in my life are simply baggage that I have chosen to hide among. They all have one main root, the same one I suspect that caused Saul to hide among the baggage – FEAR!

The bottom line… all those things tell me I am not worthy, that I am just so much baggage, and God cannot use me. As a result I let the belief set in that I can’t succeed – fear takes over and I stay hidden among the baggage.

The sad thing… this is just all hogwash… the truth is I have the omnipotent (all powerful) – omniscient (all knowing) – omnipresent (God who is everywhere) -Spirit dwelling right inside me. The truth is I go nowhere without God! The truth is I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13. This is God’s truth and the rest is the devils lies!

So, I guess the real question for the day, for me, is “Who will I choose to believe today, the devil or God? I think I shall chose God!!!

Watch out world here “I” come!
Until next time – Be encouraged

Hugs, Sandra

  1. Thank you for taking time to comment. Let me know if there is any way I can be of help to you as you decide to leave the baggage area 🙂

  2. I really like this one as I too am one who hides with the baggage because I have believed the lie that I am not worthy to be Gods child and too tired, old and overweight to be used by Him. I think I need to do some thinking and make some changes. Love you…
